Macchiato vs. Latte: Difference?

First things first: Starbucks has ruined the macchiato. Starbucks redefined espresso for unknown reasons.  

The chain's caramel-loaded macchiato debuted in 1996 to celebrate its 25th anniversary.   

Since then, American coffee aficionados have confused this variant of the macchiato with a latte, blurring the distinction between the two.

As a veteran barista, I want to clarify.A Starbucks "iced caramel macchiato" is an iced latte with vanilla and caramel syrups.  

Traditional macchiatos are never iced or caramelized. Both lattes and macchiatos are Italian, and since they use espresso and milk, separating their technical distinctions is challenging.  

distinct quantities and preparations make distinct drinks. Lattes are larger, sweeter "walkaround" drinks, while macchiatos are little, strong-flavored, and meant to be drunk all at once.  

Iced lattes are made by pouring milk directly from the jug into the glass without human intervention.
